Fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews: Brian, Patty, Norman (Lorraine), Mark, Lara (Darrell) and their children: William, Sara, Sean, Stephen, Theresa, Howard, Caleb, Sawyer, Liam, and Cèilidh.
Norm was born on Oct 3rd, 1928 and grew up in several Montreal neighborhoods. He attended Montreal High School until grade 9 when his father persuaded him to take a job as a clerk with Anglo American Cable Company, a subsidiary of Western Union telegraph. Initially shy, he was 19 when he met Helen, his life-long love and bride at a community center dance. Their romance started with a shared passion for dancing on Friday nights at the Park Extension Community Centre. In 1949, they married in Montreal and ventured to the start-up community in the far north of Quebec, called Sept-Iles. They settled there for over 28 years and raised their family. Working for the Iron Ore Company, he loved electronics and earned a degree in Electronics Engineering, eventually becoming Superintendent. Later in his career, he and Helen moved to Alberta where he became the Director of Standards & Specifications for the Alberta Government working with other province officials and internationally.
Throughout his life, Norm was heavily involved in community service and family. He was one of the founders of Club Camping Caravanning Cote Nord and was recently to be honoured as a special guest at their 50th anniversary celebration in Sept-Iles this August. Travel with family each year was part of his tradition. He was very active with the Ham Radio Association across the country under call signs in Quebec, Labrador, Jamaica, Alberta and finally in Ontario, as VE3VY in Westport where he and Helen had lived since 1986. Helen and Norm celebrated their 66th anniversary last October. Family and friends cherish memories of this adventurous, fun-loving, compassionate and devout man who was loved by many and will be missed immensely.
A funeral service will be held at St Edward Church, Westport, Ontario on Saturday, July 23rd, 2016 at 11:00 am. A celebration of Norm’s life will follow at 1 pm at the Westport Legion Branch 542.
