Obituary for John Traynor

Traynor, John

Passed away suddenly November 21, 2023 at the age of 75 at home on Westport Mountain.
Johnny was born March 7, 1948 at the Traynor homestead on the mountain, the youngest of 15 children born to Howard and Mary (Norwood) Traynor. He went to St. Edward Catholic School and then attended St. Lawrence College in Cornwall during its inaugural year of 1967. He found his way to Toronto by the 1970s, era of the cheesy mustache and fast cars in which he shined. It was there that he met Karen Saker of Toronto, where they were married Dec. 26, 1975. They moved to Sudbury and then North Bay as Johnny embarked on a 30-plus year career with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and its predecessors, a job he took great pride in as he travelled to communities big and small across Northern Ontario. They raised sons Ian and Paul in North Bay, and lived a full life there, before the call of the Mountain saw Johnny and Karen retire to Westport in 2012.
Known as ‘Teco' to many, Johnny was an outgoing man who loved people. If he didn’t know someone, he made a point of getting to know them. In addition to being a long-suffering fan of the Jays and the Leafs, he was proud to be a member of the Traynor-Norwood Hunt Camp since its inception in the 1970s, a place he got to hone the stories and bad jokes he shared year round. He got to spend a good part of the past few weeks there for deer hunting, despite failing health. He never lost his gregarious nature and positive outlook on life.
Johnny is survived by Karen; son Ian and wife Dawn of Pike Lake along with their children Sawyer and Scarlett; and son Paul and his wife Brooklyn of North Bay, and their daughter Layne.
He is also survived by sisters Noreen Donovan, Dorothy McCann and Pat (Glen) McNichols; sisters in-law Betsy Traynor and Gwen Traynor; brother-in-law Mike Saker and wife Gail of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia; and many proud nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Howard and Mary, sisters Theresa (Jim) Brown, Rosie Lloyd, Marg (Neil) Crichton, Joannie (Ron) Fraser and Jeannie (Roy) Skuce; brothers Robert (Boots), Gerry, Tommy, Leo, Mike (Viola) and Frank; and brothers-in-law Joe Donovan and Ralph McCann.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, Nov. 25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Legion 542, Westport, followed by a gathering at the Traynor-Norwood Hunt Camp on North Shore Road.
Funeral arrangements by Lyons Funeral Home.
