Obituary for Jan "John" Auer

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of husband and father, Jan (John)
Willem Auer, on March 13, 2023, in Westport at the age of 80.

John was born on April 10, 1942 in Utrecht, Netherlands, during the height of the
Second World War, where he and his family stayed until the end of the war, before
moving to Ottawa, where he grew up.

He attended McGill University and the University
of Toronto where he received a PhD in Mathematics. He went on to become a
professor of mathematics at Brock University in St. Catharines, where he worked until
his retirement in 2001.

An aficionado of literature, a sailing enthusiast, connoisseur of fine wine, and quick-
witted conversationalist, he never missed a moment to impart knowledge or crack a
joke. A learned man of many interests and disciplines, he spent his retirement years
expanding his linguistic horizons, reading, bird watching, and stargazing. There were
few natural wonders he didn’t take interest in, and everyone stood to learn more
because of it. His absence will be deeply felt by those whom he loved and loved him.

He is survived by his wife, Janette, his five children Katherine Noyes (grandchildren
Elinore, Elias and Cordelia), Nicole McGee (grandchildren Haellie, Adam, Nicholas and
Norah), Anthony (Erica, grandson Aidan), Stephanie, and James (Ashley Alves), as well
as his younger sister and brother, Wilma Fraser (Bob), and Jos (Jenny), and the many
cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family to which he was a patriarchal figure as
the oldest of his generation. He will be with us in our collective memory, that we will
cherish for the rest of our days.
