Obituary for Michael Ottenhof

OTTENHOF, Michael Mathew
May 11, 1943 – July 5, 2022

Mike Ottenhof, age 79 years, died at home supported by his devoted family on July 5, 2022. He
was recently diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer, and it was his wish to be cared for by
family members and be in the beautiful family home that he built on the Rideau at the end of
his life.

Mike is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Beverley (nee McEwen) and his two children,
Leigh-Ann Fingland (Edward) and Shane (Hollie Currie). His family was by far the most
important thing in his life.

Born in Amsterdam in 1943, he immigrated to Canada with his parents, John and Nellie (nee
Peek), and nine siblings on the M.S. Kota Inten in 1948. Surviving him are brothers Frank (late
Pat) and Henry (Lynn). Predeceased by brothers Tony (late Phyllis), John (Margaret), Ray (late
Irene), and Harry (late Moira) and sisters Claire Kirby (late Richard), Nellie Hobbs (late Clifford),
and Betty.

Mike was a skilled stone mason and contractor who proudly ran his own business, Michael
Ottenhof Construction, for over 50 years. His son, Shane, worked alongside him for almost 30
of those years. The evidence of his craftsmanship can be found in innumerable homes and
buildings in Kingston, the surrounding area, and well beyond.

He will be dearly missed by all who knew him, as will his blue eyes, smile, charm, wit, sage
advice, and his never-ending supply of stories.

Family and friends will be received for visitation at Kingston West Free Methodist Church, 1575
Woodbine Road, on Tuesday July 12 between the hours of 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral service will
be held at Kingston West Free Methodist Church on Wednesday July 13 at 11 am. Interment to
follow at Cataraqui Cemetery.

As expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer
Society for pancreatic cancer research or Breast Cancer Action Kingston would be appreciated
by the family.
