Obituary for Monica "Mickey" Scanlan

Monica “Mickey” Scanlan died on June 1, 2019, in Almonte, Ont., at the age of 96. Born in Elgin, Ont., Mickey was the youngest of nine children and lived her entire life in and around the community of Westport, Ont. She was a teacher for 26 years in the Salem school community until her retirement in 1986 and she was a dedicated and active member of the St. Edward’s Catholic Woman’s League for more than 70 years.

Though she would hate to hear us say it, it is hard to overstate what a wonderful role model Mom was to her enormous, devoted family and countless friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard, and daughter Margie, and is survived by her children: Bob (Judy), Michael (Lorna), Mary Kelly (late Mark; John Barr), Harry (Marian), Tom (Bonny), Pat Bauder (late Gary), Norine Kiddie (Mike), Jim (Michele), Terry (late Margaret; Cheryl), and Cathy Hoehn (Cory); as well as by her 26 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren. Also lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbours who cherished her loving ways.

Mickey was huge of heart and strong of spirit, and happiest when surrounded by friends and family, sharing stories, playing cards, and laughing together. We loved her with all our hearts and we will miss her very much.

Visitation on Tuesday, June 4 and Wednesday, June 5 from 2–4 pm and 7–9 pm at Lyons Funeral Home, Westport, Ont. Funeral Mass on Thursday, June 6 at 11 am at St. Edward’s Catholic Church, Westport, Ont. Funeral arrangements by Lyons Funeral Home, lyonsfuneralhome.ca.
