Condolences

Condolence From: Gary Mammoletti
Condolence: Rick Lyons was my Best Friend. We met in Manitouwadge in 1957 and have remained Best Friends since. He was undoubtedly the best looking teenager in school back then lol!
He grew up to be a Great Man, well-loved and well-travelled too. As Mary says, a fantastic storyteller and historian. His smile was more than enough to brighten your day. Happily i did see him just before this gentle man passed. I CRIED!! Along with Mary, we who truly knew Rick will mourn and miss him dearly. I posted some grainy? photos from 1958, back in our teenage days.

Condolence From: Peter Burnett
Condolence: Although I feel a profound loss at the passing of Rick I am honoured to have known him. I will always treasure the stories and life lessons he shared with me through the years. Rick was my mentor and friend. I have had few people in my life that have influenced me as much as Rick. He was truly one of a kind.

Condolence: To the family of Rick Lyons,

I was a classmate of Rick's at Aylmer High. I remember his ready smile and good humour. He appears to have led a rewarding and joyful life.
May his memory be a blessing to his family, friends and those privileged to have known him.

Condolence: Dear Mary, I was Ricky's classmate in Aylmer for a short time. I remember him as his class picture, charming, sparkly mischievous brown eyes, sculpted hair, sports jacket. We spoke a few years ago when we were trying to organize our class reunion. He was just as I remembered, friendly, funny, full of ideas. Your life together seems to have been filled with fun and love and frolic. You have all been very lucky. My sympathies for your loss.

Condolence: Dear Mary
My sincere condolences, as someone earlier said, once you'd met Rick you never forgot him. I was a classmate in Aylmer & I only saw him once in Calgary when he was taking his girl to school, & he walked past my classroom. We spoke for a minute & I never saw him again. I watched the You Tube memorial & am happy he had such an interesting life filled with love. He left too soon. May you remember the good times,
Sincerely,
Storme

Condolence: Dear Mary,
Please accept our deepest sympathies at having recently heard of Rick's passing. While we knew Rick had been in failing health for some years, whenever we had a chance to chat with him he always seemed so inwardly full of life. He was also still sharp as a tack and always up to date on local and world events and still seemed to have that great sense of humour when we last saw him a couple of months ago. While he left us much too soon, what an amazingly full and exciting life he seems to have had! We still remember Rick jokingly recounting his exciting work with Calgary's Ralph Klein and seem to recall that also included joining "King Ralph" in Sarajevo for the 1984 Winter Olympics and both of you at the Calgary Stampede.

While we knew a bit about his early journalism background in Ottawa, we will probably always remember Rick as a real'nautical man' given the marina experience and beautiful boating magazine work you both produced ... but mostly because of the joy he seem to have just looking out on the water at the boats! One of the pictures in your beautiful YouTube posting has a pensive Rick seeming to be looking out on the coast. Rick was a beautiful and caring man who now has the 'best room in the house' up there to look down at all the boats down here and you and the family and make sure you are all safe.

Thank you Mary for the wonderful loving care you gave Rick day and night for years - particularly over his later more difficult years where he relied entirely on you. Please get some rest now since nothing can hurt Rick now and we're sure he's happy. God bless you and the family. Yvonne & Peter

Condolence: I remember Rick from my years (1960-64) at the Ottawa Journal. He was a very good friend, and always loved a laugh.
It has been over 50 years since our paths crossed, but he was the kind of person you never forget.
My condolences to Mary & family.

Condolence From: Judy Morrison
Condolence: As a young reporter, I first met Rick after joining the Ottawa City Hall Press Corps. He was a natural newshound who regularly broke stories for The Ottawa Journal while, apparently, having the time of his life as a legendary prankster. A fierce competitor, he was not above planting "fake dupes" to trip up unscrupulous snoops trying to match his scoops. Rick thrived on a good story and a good gag. - I still laugh to myself about his elaborate efforts to resurrect a scam story about a "giant jackrabbit" farm for Bells Corners.
As a person, he was top notch - not only smart, but the most fun in the room.
Rick Lyons was a classic.
